In fourth grade, I was diagnosed with glaucoma. No cause was ever found; by my late twenties my eye pressure had returned to normal, and I was given the all-clear. But in fourth grade I had no way of knowing when I might go blind. I might open my eyes and see nothing. I might go to sleep and wake to pitch darkness. Part of my vision might go missing. I might “see” a black spot. I had to live my days with those thoughts. For me, “looking” and “seeing” were real problems.
In my early teens I often went to mines to dig for rock crystal and topaz in the rough. I still love crystals; recently I bought a few lab-grown bismuth crystals, and they sit on my desk. It was also in those years that I was influenced by Shusaku Endo. The scene at the end of Deep River, where the characters gather at the Ganges, still flows on inside me.
In 1995, under the name D.sign, I printed a circle and a geometric pattern on my home printer, made them into a New Year’s card, and sent it to a single friend. The computer did the drawing; the printer was the brush.
In high school I wanted to go to art school. It was also in high school that I first saw the clothes of Jean Paul Gaultier. Seeing his creations — the clothes and the shows — I knew I was truly one of those who make.
At university, with my professors’ permission, I attended lectures in the faculties of letters, integrated human studies, economics and education, and sat in as an observer at the graduate department of aesthetics and art history. The professor there always wore Gaultier from head to toe.
In 2002, in the seminar on the history of political thought at Kyoto University’s Faculty of Law, I presented “Political Thought in the Creations of Jean Paul Gaultier.” The following year, an older member of the seminar who worked at an apparel trading company told me, “If you really love clothes, don’t sell them. You have to make them.” That year I took leave from the university and studied art theory under a painter. D.sign began to move from a concept toward preparing for a practice.
Crystal and flow had already appeared in my work. In 2021 I made 流れ着いた先に (Nagaretsuita saki ni), and in 眺むれば (Nagamureba) and カゼトイシ (Kazetoishi), both 2023, I turned parts of the picture into something like crystal.
